Originally published in 1983, this book offers a perspective on the secondary school years from the standpoint at home. In the early 1980s as now, there was no shortage of advice to parents on how they should bring up their children, and what their relationship should be with the schools their children attended. More rarely heard was the parent’s voice of experience on the stages of family life and how the children’s school life is seen from the family point of view. The purpose of this book was to urge reconsideration of taken-for-granted assumptions about the appropriate relationship between home and secondary school. It can be read today in its historical context.
Disciplinary Literacy: The Other Disciplines is intended as both a textbook and a handbook. It will give content area literacy teachers/professors a much needed textbook to fully address all of their candidates' needs, not just the needs of traditional content. The majority of states (47) require all preservice teaching candidates to successfully complete a content area reading/literacy course; making the course as relevant as possible to all teacher candidates is essential. Disciplinary Literacy: The Other Disciplines will also serve as a handbook filled with practical strategies, suggestions, handouts, and examples for the content literacy teachers/professors to easily incorporate into their courses. Preservice teaching candidates will also be able to use this text as a resource. Also, they will be able to employ many of the practical strategies, etc. in their own classrooms.
In the wake of initiatives such as No Child Left Behind and the use of high-stakes testing, the emphasis in schools has been on drill and practice for the test. Genuine understanding and critical thinking have been increasingly shortchanged. As a result, students have fewer opportunities to advance their insight into cognitive and emotional challenges, even though both teachers and parents recognize the importance of developing deliberative and reflective thinking skills. This book uniquely combines two things. First, it provides resources for classroom teachers in middle and secondary school that make it possible to, at a moment's notice, take advantage of a teachable moment by drawing students into productive intellectual discussions. Second, it gives the reader an overview of the rationale and the research base for engaging students in educational activities that are truly intellectual and that are not limited to training for testing success.

This book addresses a very important aspect of teacher training, as well as the training of educational administrators, school counselors and other educational allied professionals, an aspect that is too often overlooked. That aspect is role modeling a deliberative mind. A deliberative mind is one filled with wonderment and eagerness to learn. We introduce educational professionals to systematic pondering and large-scale wonderment.
